LD (learning disability); BD (behavioral disorder); and ADD/ADHD - although we also encounter MI (Moderately Impaired) from time to time.

The overwhelming number will have learning disabilities, from mild to severe. Teachers also deal with emotionally/behaviorally disordered kids and mild mental impairments. A large, less definable group falls under "Other Health Impairment" and can include physical disabilities, ADHD, brittle diabetes, seizure disorders, severe asthma, etc. Many of these children can be accommodated with little extra assistance on the part of the teacher. If the child is in your classroom, there should be a very specific Individual Education Plan and you should be part of the team that develops the plan. It is not unreasonable to insist that extra help be provided to you if the child requires extraordinary services. The goal, of course, is to keep all students as close to "regular" education goals as possible. Many students will receive some help in special ed settings and some in the regular class.
