Australia was part of the British Commonwealth and therefore loyal to the King (at that time) as was Canada too. Both sent military personnel to help Great Britain which was for a long time the ONLY country defying the onward march of the Nazi war-machine which is quick succession had overrun and occupied Austria,Belgium,Holland,France, Norway, Poland, Czechoslovakia etc and was turning its attention to Russia and GB.

Contrary to some Hollywood notions the USA did not help until after part of its own naval fleet was attacked by Japan at Pearl Harbour

As part of the British Dominion, and not yet an independent state Australia had no choice but to declare war on Germany and especially to fight the war in the Pacific

Because at the time Australia, along with the other Commonwealth countries, were still under the rule of Britain (per-say) and seeing Britain was at war, these countries had no choice in the matter.

Basically to suck up to the US and the UK, to ensue safety for us in the years to come.

We really had nothing to do with it until we became involved. Once we did, Japan bombed our Northernmost city, Darwin.

England and Australia and Canada, etc. were all bound together as one.
