You might be able to get up to 1.5 watts out of the line before the phone company decided that there was a fault. This isn't enough to give an off-hook reading at the local exchange but may be enough to trigger bad-line type diagnostic messages. That's only just about enough to run two blue-white LEDs if you are careful (meaning you unplug all your phones and modems so the on-hook leakage across them is not contributing to the drain on the line). Also you need to ensure that the ring indicator ( a really big positive voltage compared with the nominal -50V quiescent line) doesn't blow your circuit to bits.

so you could get about 13 kW-Hrs per _year_ assuming that instead of a LED you had a 100% efficient method of storing that energy till you needed it. You can work out the return on your investment for this optimistic case.

P.S. - I don't know where you live and have no idea whether what you are evaluating would be legal.

Best of luck - Mike

Dial the phone company and ask their Theft of Service bureau. They have your number. As more phone extensions are added to a circuit (a house) the bells ring softer and softer. When you dim the entire neighborhood many (carrying pitchforks and baseball bats?) may think it was a dim idea, especially if they needed to make an emergency call. But try your cell phone. It's your battery, right? Just kidding.

Upgrade your telco service to 300 amp/220volt and put a really big transformer in the line.

You could just use the phone to ask some mates to come round with torches.

Spend heaps on capacitors etc, and say 20 cents on electricity bill because the big problem is that when you draw down on the current the phone just goes ....................

You would do much better figuring out how to convert lightning into usable power.
