Every time Adam Goodes plays well for the Sydney Swans, he always gets a post-game message of congratulations from the club's greatest-ever player - Bob Skilton.

And now Goodes joins Skilton as the only Swans player ever to win the Brownlow Medal on more than one occasion after Goodes won the game's highest individual honour outright on Monday night after having shared it with Adelaide's Mark Ricciuto and Collingwood's Nathan Buckley in 2003.

The Charles Brownlow Trophy, better known as the Brownlow Medal and colloquially as Charlie, is the medal awarded to the "best and fairest" player in the Australian Football League during the regular season (ie not including finals matches) as decided upon by umpires. It is regarded as the most prestigious award for individual players in the league. Though often referred to as the "best and fairest", the official terminology is "fairest and best", reflecting an emphasis on sportsmanship and fair play. It was named after a Geelong player and long-serving administrator who was active in the early days of the Victorian Football League, Charles Brownlow.

Sydney's Adam Goodes won the 2006 Brownlow Medal on Monday night of September 25, as the 12th player to have earned the honour more than once and the first to do so from a club based outside of Victoria.

Goodes finished with 26 votes, three clear of the Western Bulldogs' Scott West while West Coast captain Chris Judd was third on 21.

It is the second occasion Goodes has won the AFL's highest individual honour, having shared the medal with Adelaide's Mark Ricciuto and Collingwood's Nathan Buckley in 2003.

Brownlow Medal also called The Charles Brownlow Trophy and colloquially as Charlie, is the medal awarded to the "best and fairest" player in the Australian Football League during the regular season (ie not including finals matches) as decided upon by umpires. It is regarded as the most prestigious award for individual players in the league.
