Spiders don't like the smell of Horse Chestnut and Clove oil, so mix some of this together with water and spray it round the doors and windows so they don't come in. Some spiders are so big they make me feel ill! But apparently they are no bigger this year than any other, its just you forget when you don't see them for a few months. You could get one of those tubes that sucks spiders up and then you can put them out in the garden without killing them. This horse chestnut spray definitely works though.

I'm surprised the cats don't eat the spiders. You don't indicate where you are located, and the need to deal with the spiders depends on what kind they are. Cobweb spiders like to invade patios, and this can include the black widows and brown widows. Other spiders like the orb weavers are harmless, and can just be relocated. There are no pesticides that would rid spiders and be safe. Nothing natural is going to be fully effective to repel spiders, You might set up a bird feeder or two, to attract birds. they will prey on the spiders. Another option is to hose down the patio periodically, with a little persistence, the spiders will go elsewhere.

spiders live in fear of other bigger spiders.
i have heard of that if you place them big jokey plastic ones around the house the smaller spiders will stay away as you mentioned they are territorial..
there is also a gadget you can buy that transmits different frequencies that actually paralise the spider thus enabling you to pick it up and remove it humanely, but thes are not to be used around cats apparantely as it has been known to send them into a temporary state of paralysis too.
hope to have been of service..

I can certainly sympathize with you. I recently bought an insecticide called Temp at a local farm service store. It kills every bug you can imagine. I have literally watched spiders die. If you spray a barrier about 4 feet wide around your house, they will be dead before they can come into your house. Try it.. it works.

i find it hard to believe that they actually attack you...it's certainly better to have them in the house eating all the other nasty insects...what constitutes "over-run"?... the bigger ones will eat the small ones anyhow...u'll never successfully rid urself of any insect anyway; they rule the planet and will still be here when the human race is long gone...u are probably a thousand times bigger than any spider u can get that's native to this country (UK), so they won't be carrying u off to their lair - they can't build a web big enough to snare you and none of them are poisonous enough to harm u...try and get some therapy, i'm told hypnotism's good...

I know its hard if you are scared but try and overcome your fear as spiders are good house pests. They eat the horrid things such as flies.
