I have seen some of my girlfriends do this and been phoned for an alibi more than once. I don't understand it myself, I could certainly not continue a charade and would be sh*tting myself that something came out. Knowing my luck it probably would so best for me to shy away from such larks. It can only be an attention thing I think. Some women need more attention than others.
