Buying second hand laptop will be much more costlier in the long run than buying a new laptop. Think of the repair cost, upgradation cost and mantenance cost to name a few. Buying anything used electronic is very risky and not at all reliable. It will work for a few days and it will conk-out and there is no warranty on second hand stuff. I am telling you from personnel experience. Think carefully before you invest any money but I'd suggest you buy a new one and you won't regret it.

I've had great luck on eBay. Stick with a name brands like IBM, Dell, or Toshiba so parts are easy to find if you need them. Only buy from a vendor with 1000 or more positive ratings, don't worry there are hundreds of them and a lot of them offer warranties. . You get a great used laptop, although normally they come with a useless battery.
Another place I've bought cheap laptops from is http://www.dellauction.com . Basically, Dell saw how much money the eBay vendors were making putting up their formerly corporate leased laptops up for auction, so the made their own auction site. Right now I'm typing this on a 3 year old Dell latitude C610 1gigahertz, 512 ram, 30 gig hard drive that was remanufactured by dell and was gotten for $300 a year ago. I'm sure they have even faster and more powerful machines for the same price about now. Not sure what kind of warranty you get, but I've never been turned away by tech support if I needed help. What you don't get: an operating system. you need to get a copy of windows from somewhere else with dell auction, they wipe them clean.

You can buy used laptops for arounf $125-$150 on e bay, but you always run the risk of getting something that doesn't work. A basis Dell Inspiron 120 in new condition is about $500.
