Well if you're serious, it sounds to me like you're making the first steps. Just by simply registering with a site like this and learning to use it, you are getting the best from your computer.

I've been using a computer, in one shape or another, for 22 years now (god thats scary!), so I am completely comfortable with them....in many ways my life wouldn't be the same without them. But my wife is only just beginning to learn and I can see the trouble she has, the fear of the unknown, getting better day after day.

Its no easy task when you first start - especially if you haven't used them before and the people around you all seem like "experts". But it can be gratifying if you stick with it.

My wife's main fear is that she'll press the wrong button and the whole thing will explode - or simply she'll do something wrong and the computer will wipe itself clean and destroy all of her hard work and money. This is the biggest fear that most new users have, but believe it or not its the easiest to overcome...

Computers have been "dumbed down" considerably over the last 20 years...or rather they've become more "user friendly" for the average person on the street. Its the most important thing that you need to remember. The reason I say this is because pretty much everything you do with a computer nowadays will return a pop up box asking you "do you want to do this?" with a "yes" or "no" answer. The key thing to using a computer is to read everything that is put in front of you. Don't be rushed. Don't try to skip through things as fast as possible. Take your time. Read everything and if you're not entirely sure what the question means, respond "no" or "cancel". You can do no harm by following this ethos.

The main way of overcoming your fear is to use computers more. Take it slowly at first and the more you use it, the more you repeat the same actions, the faster and more competent you will become. Also, I would highly recommend that you jump onto a beginners course at your local college. Don't worry about perceived stigma, just grab the bull by the horns and go for it. No-one will think less of you.

My mum is 61 and she recently took a beginners course at a local college that ran for about 3 months - it taught her the basics...beginning with how to turn it on...finishing with her creating spreadsheets to do her own accounts. Now she's a complete convert and calls herself a "silver surfer" (!), she loves it...and believe me when I say that she hadn't even turned on a computer before she went on the course.

So in a nutshell, take your time, read everything and try to learn as you go along....don't be afraid to ask questions. Your fear will soon go.

Good luck with it!

Do things on the computer that will make you more comfortable. Asking questions on Yahoo seems to be a good start. You are obviously exploring the internet, which is a big step in the right direction.
If you are having specific problems, then you have to address those one at a time. For example, I knew someone that always had problems with click, drag, and drop. I suggested playing solitare on the computer, which allows you to practice those skills. Or playing Minesweeper can allow you to practice right vs. left clicking.
Books can be a great source of information, or simply exploring things online.
Good luck

Join the club! I got over mine by doing evening classes at a local college. I started with New Clait which is for beginners, then did a basic course in Photoshop which was the sort of thing I'm more interested in. I got hooked and forget to be nervous while I was working.
I still don't like the big tangle of wires that comes out the back but just try to keep it tidy.
You're not the only one that has this phobia, just try to find a course thats fun and with a good tutor.
