A small handful of soda crystals in the bottom of the drum before you load each load of laundry - helps prevent limescale around the element - the machine will last longer.
Make a solution of white vinegar (about a dessert spoonful) and bicarbonate of soda (about three teaspoons full) combined with water (up to a pint) - use to sponge/spray stains - apply just before loading washing. (very good for getting rid of blood stains too).
A small solution of bicarbonate of soda added to each load will bring out the brightness of the colours and whiteness of the whites (which of course you wash separately).
A small cloth dipped in same bicarbonate solution and lightly wrung and then added to tumble dryer will soften all clothes, including 'hard' towels.

*clean lint filter after each use
*add 1 cup of white vinegar to final rinse to avoid lint
*throw in a yard of nylon netting in the dryer to catch excess lint
*dry corduroy slowly on low heat. brush with clothes brush while still damp.
*shampoo works wonders on collar stains (body oils) brush on with old toothbrush and let stand before washing.
*wash/clean your washing machine
*use a teaspoon of fabric softener to a cup of water. swirl a washcloth in the mix and toss into the dryer with your clothes. the fabric softener will last a LONG LONG time.
do you need ways of getting certain stains out? or general tips?

Keep your whites and dark colours separate. A good stain remover spray like 'Shout' is handy.

Always seperate your whites and colours. Generally I was whites on 60 degrees and colours at 40. Be sure to check labels to see if any items need dry cleaning or hand washing.
Iron items before they get bone dry - it's easier!

when i buy any dark items, i always soak them in cold salty water for 20mins before i wash them, and you will find it does not run. i also wash all my clothes inside out, because if you have any dark clothes ie jeans you will find the colour is more darker in the wrong side.
