You can self certificate for seven days, thereafter a doctors certificate is required.
If your first day sick was last Thursday (that was day one), by Tuesday it would be day six and today is day seven and your employer will need a certificate from tomorrow.
Your employer will have to give you a self certification form when you return to work.
A doctor will not normally issue a certificate earlier than seven days.
DONT BE BULLIED. GET WELL SOON.

You do not need a sicknote for your employer till you have been off work for 7 days. (think this is not just working days but seven including the weekend) The first 7 days are what is known as self certification and you should be asked to fill a return to work form in when you return after sickness stating on it your reasons for being absent.
***I have seen the other reply's and if you are from the UK then the law is 7 days self certification. Not sure about other country's though*** Incidentally the first three days of any sickness period are unpaid

In Ireland after 3 sick days a doctors note is required i would assume its the same in england. You can check the working regulations etc on the net to double check but i'd say your employer has every right to ask especially if you will be paid sick pay.

every company is different. at the hospital i work at in AZ-if you miss three days in a row-you have to be cleared through occupational health before they will allow you to return.
my boyfriend works for the airport and he has to have a note after missing 3 days as well.
companies have the right to decide their own rules and regulations so if your boss says you need a note-then just get one-not worth the hassle to try and find proof-especially if your doc will write it w/no problem.

I thought the law was clear about sickness. You are entitled to five days with a self cert, after five days your employer may ask you for a sick note, the doctor may charge you for this however you should be able to claim it back from your employer

When calculating your days off sick, you count the weekends (even though they are not working days). So you have been off sick for 6 days.
This is for calculation purposes only, you will only have to actually take 4 sick days, and will only get paid for 4 sick days, likewise you will only need a sick note for 4 days!!

It relies upon on what's reported on your settlement of employment. such fairly some human beings get one even as they first commence operating yet not in any respect examine it or their 'paintings force guidance guide'. in the journey that they have got paid you organisation ill pay in the organisation twelve months, to be in a position to communicate (those aren't any further a similar as a annual twelve months i.e some agencies paintings April to April). and look at were given reached your entitlement on that organisation ill pay then ssp will be paid. all of it truly relies upon on the settlement i'm gotten smaller for 4 week ill pay at complete cost in a unmarried twelve months. after that i'm on ssp. that is regularly a similar for a professional-rota twelve months so in case you in elementary words worked 3 days per week you would possibly want to in elementary words fall ill pay at 4 weeks for the three days of the week you would possibly want to paintings! fairly some agencies do not pay organisation ill pay in any respect so that you've been fortunate no longer to were on ssp on your first ailment. like i discussed on the starting up examine your settlement (through regulation you'll have one) this may element your ill pay entitlements or element you to the respectable organisation document about ill pay. wish that helps

They are perhaps asking for a doctor note due to not believing you or want to make sure you are okay before returning to work. Otherwise you have to comply with your doctors requirements.

They probably think you weren't really sick! Get them the note to prove them wrong. Companies can decide their own rules on this one but even if it was against the rules, bosses don't always follow them!
