The Netherlands is currently populated by slightly more than 16 million fair-skinned people of Dutch extraction. The Netherlands and Dutch people have played an important role for centuries as a cultural center. The Dutch society is egalitarian and modern. The people are modest, tolerant, independent, self-reliant, and entrepreneurial. They value education, hard work, ambition and ability. The Dutch have an aversion to the nonessential. Ostentatious behaviour is to be avoided. Accumulating money is fine, but spending money is considered something of a vice and highly associated with being a show-off. A high style is considered wasteful and suspect. The Dutch are very proud of their cultural heritage, rich history in art and music and involvement in international affairs, although a certain elitist smugness can be observed in the unofficial Netherlands motto "You're not much, if your not Dutch".
