Well if you ask about NHL the rules are 20 players on each teams. You need 2 goalies, one on the ice or your regular goalie, Brodeur from New Jersey is a good example an the other as a substitute.
Some team will use 7 defence-mans and others 6 and that depend if the coaches want to use 4 complete forward lines.
The forwards lines are composed of your 1 line who usually are your 3 best forwards on each positions, 1 left and 1 rigth winger and a centre. The second line is your second best. The third is your defencive line and the fourth your check line. The check line is the one that if the coach is using 7 defence-mans well usually your best centre from the first or second line who will compelte that line and also the check line is the rowdy one.
But to comple the rooster you have 3 substitute player who usually don't wear the outfit for the game. They are chosen in case of a injure player and they usually know if they play the game during the game. The coach's are require to give a 20 players alignment before the game and after it's given they can not change it.
The rules demand at least a minimum of 9 players to play the game on each side in minor hockey with at least 1 goalie.
Hope this will help you.

Assuming you are speaking of ice hockey, it depends on the league as to how many players are on a team, but traditionally, there are 12 players on the ice at any one time. Each team plays a line of 1 centre, 2 wingers, 2 defensemen and 1 goalie
