i would suggest you NOT go with generation 1 games. these include red/blue/yellow. while they are the best, in my opinion, they are quite outdated, the amount of moves, types are less than in later games, DIG is too powerful, and certain moves change types later on
i would suggest you NOT go with generation 2 games. these include gold/silver/crystal. while they are quite fun, the EV system was not set up correctly, allowing you to power a pokemon up beyond what it's supposed to be. because of this potential for abuse, gen 1 and 2 games are not allowed to mix with gen 3 games, where it was corrected.
i would suggest you stick with a generation 3 game. these include ruby/sapphire/emerald and fire/leaf. of these, i would go with either fire or leaf, but that's just a matter of personal preference. of the five of them, emerald is the most up to date
you cannot go with a generation 4 game. these include pearl and diamond, are set for the DS, not the GBA, and these games haven't been released yet. they are probably out in japan, but you are looking for an english version.

Emerald is in my opinion the best version for GBA. Emerald has many features and bonsues that improve on Ruby/Sapphire and features that FireRed and LeafGreen don't have.
Not only do you have the completely new Hoenn Pokedex but you can also get some rare Johto Pokemon in the new Safari Zone Expansion that opens once you beat the Elite Four. You can also go back and fight Gym Leaders again, who will get stronger as time progresses.
You also have the Pokemon Contests, which is not even included in FR/LG. In this way, you can train your Pokemon for entirely different battles that rely on different strategies and techniques than simple trainer battling.
There is also the Battle Frontier in which you engage in varying challenges to earn additional badges. You can fight using rental Pokemon, battle through tournaments, and a host of other types and rules that will keep you interested for quite some time.
If you'd like more info on Emerald, try gamewinners.com or gamefaqs.com and check out the forums. Good luck!

I'd have to say.. the Emerald version.
Hours of addictive pokemon. And loads of features from the others all rolled into one.
