Brief history - classis cars used spokes wheels, like that of a bicycle. But they twist and bend by the huge torque from higher engine performance.

So steel wheels were intorduced to counter this problem.

As the metal industry progressed, alloys (a mixture of metal) was introduced into wheels manufacturing. McLaren cars uses Magnisium Alloy - you can lift that wheel with 1 finger! But very expensive.

So on normal cars today, alloys are just accessories to make the car look better. Some alloy wheels are heavier than their steel cousins. Blink Blink

In general, alloy wheels are lighter, more attractive, and better at dissipating brake heat that their steel counterparts. They tend to be available in standardised sizes which means competition amongst tyre vendors giving low prices and good availability
Fitting alloy wheels means a reduction in rotating mass at the ends of your suspension components, giving you improved steering feel and greater braking response.
