Typically, the production engineering sorts out problems during the manufacturing cycle. Usually they sort out problems with the product.
Other possible aspects of production engineering deal with the planning or possibly the facilities. Planning, sometimes called manufacturing engineering, is responsible for deciding how things get put together and what materials are required. Other engineers are required for the tooling and manpower requirements.
