I think they want to know whether that person is male or female.
You can't always tell just by what someone writes.
Take you, for example. (No disrespect intended)
Your screen name is china, which I would associate with a female, yet your remarks have a decidedly masculine tone.
So what are you, boy or girl? It's anyone's guess.

I have never, and will never ask for a photo. I only post REAL pictures of myself on here and I simply delete all requests I get to send more or different photos. It is the text of a person, I find intriguing here, and it is the one place where we are not burdened with the physical self. Many people do not recognize that benefit.

I don't think it is twisted at all. Although it is best to get to know someone for who they are it is perfectly normal to want to know what the person looks like too. It is unfortunate, but whether we admit it or not, we all to an extend judge by looks. Don't forget though it is easy enough for a false picture to be given just as it is easy enough for them to built a false picture of themself whilst chatting. You can never be 100% certain what they say about themselves or their life is true, just as the photo send could be of someone else other than the person you are chatting too.

I thinks there's nothing wrong with it. We are by nature inquisitive. So we are always looking for clues as to what this person is really like - is he/she just playing with me or being serious. Physical clues are another source of input.
