The Constitution entitles you to confer and be advised by a lawyer. "Legal Aid" may provide that lawyer, so long as s/he is licensed in your jurisdiction.

As throughout life, there is one rule for the rich and one rule for the poor. One rule they have in common is that both may sleep under bridges. Or so they say.

I find it strange that you use the phrase "actual lawyer .. not legal aid"

Legal Aid employs real solicitors who are criminal law experts. I know legal aid lawyers who know a hell of a lot more about criminal law than most other lawyers that I know. A legal aid lawyer is one of the best types of criminal lawyers there is.

The problem is the resources of legal aid tend to be very stretched, and the amount of TIME a Legal Aid lawyer will dedicate to your case is not ideal.

Another good way of getting free legal advice from a lawyers is by going to a Community Legal Centre. Often you will be interviewed by students, but the actual advice will come from a qualified solicitor.

When my mother needed legal advice, she called around and most lawyers said they give free advice to those whose issue seems legitimate or win able. And usually the receptionist takes down the message, then the lawyer contacts you at there convenient time. But like I mentioned earlier, sadly for some it needs to be of interest to them. But go ahead and call, some out there may help you.

Not usually. There are some clinics attached to law schools, but they don't usually handle criminal matters.

The poster above is totally correct. Often, Legal Aid lawyers are superb criminal defense attorneys - they just happen to be insanely overworked.
