The Godfather without a doubt!
It started the gangster genre trend that Goodfella's and Scarface followed. The Godfather was not an actual true story (unlike Goodfella's which is based on the life of Henry Hill), but was created at the time to represent true events in America. The "5 Families" were a correct representation and the film was actually shown privately to these families before it was released to see their reaction and seek their aproval. It was also used to convey deeper political meanings about the politics of the 1970's.

The Godfather led the way for the other two films, which were also brilliant, but might not have been made if it wasn't for The Godfather first leading the way and breaking down the barriers.

No contest, The Godfather films.
Only sequel ever to win a Best Movie Oscar was Godfather 2.
Godfather one and two totalled nine Oscars, Goodfellas only one.
Scarface, none.

I liked being able to follow the "family" right through the generations.
To see the effect the original Don Corleone had on subsequent family members.

I am going to have to go with Goodfellas. I really enjoyed this movie the most out of those films, also Goodfellas is number 1 on a lot of top movie charts.

The Godfathers I and II - no doubt..
Scarface is just sad and Goodfellas isn't as well made...

Unlike the others answering this question, i cannot choose. they all have their own unique qualities and i could give you a different answer depending on which i saw last, which at this point in time is Godfather. If you include Goodfellas (directed by Scorsese) then shouldn't you include Casino?

i never knew why people were raving about how good SCARFACE was ...until i SAW IT for the first time a few years ago: i absolutely LOVE it , and the bathtub/chainsaw scene always makes me scream. a pure De Palma treasure.

I have tried to watch The GODFATHER 1 (& even2) on tv, but never ever managed to stick till the end. too confusing for me?
GOODFELLAS does have the great "Funny how" and chicken salad scenes to be proud of.

scarface was excellent, but i prefer goodfellas. all the godfather movies are rubbish, completely over-rated... the original book by mario puzo is amazing... i guarantee, read the book and you will never watch the movies again!
