That's the mystery, even those that watch it religiously haven't a clue as to what's happening.
The characters are good, you learn about their backgrounds and connections to each other gradually.
It's not something you can come into half-way through though.
To start you would need to buy the DVD of earlier seasons and watch them all to catch up.
Addictive viewing!!

Honey, it's not just A mystery; it's THE mysterieS.
1. How did they survive?
2. How did the people from the back of the plane survive since it blew completely off?
3. What's the big creature in the forest?
4. Who are the Others?
5. How come so many of them have crossed paths before, even if they didn't know it?
6. Who put the bunkers there, for what type of scientific experiment?
7. What happens if they don't push the botton on time?
8. Why does Walt have psychic abilities?
9. How come Locke can walk now?
10. Where'd the Polar Bear come from on a tropical island?
11. What is the black smoke creature?
These are just a few. It starts tonight, watch and get hooked like the rest of us.

Nobody really knows what it's about, but what I can tell you is;

Some people crash on an island.
The hot ones take control.
The island throws up some suprises - such as mysterious black clouds and such, bears, pigs...
The survisors explore
Find other people
Other people aren't friendly
Survivors find a hatch - hatch has a man in it who is inputting a code
He runs away on a boat
He returns on a boat.
Some people die
Some people are killed
Some people are captured by 'the others'

Basically there's a lot going on that doesnt make much sense...

I understand why some people do not like Lost, because there is no "instant gratification" - it leaves more questions unanswered than answered.

I love it, its so clever and different from any of the usual drivel that comes out of America. Plus Jack is quite cute - so that helps.

If you are really interested in it I suggest borrowing the DVDs - as there is not enough space in an Answer to do it justice.

Never watched it, well I watched the very first episode and it looked rubbish so never bothered after that. No idea what all the fuss is about there are far better programmes on TV. How can they all survive for so long and no-one has tracked them down in this day and age, its bullshit!

It is good because each episode you learn more about the people - and slowly the reason they are there is pulling closer together

Also the island is a character too

I've never seen the show either but, from what i've heard and read about it,I would say it's like "Gilligan's Island" with more mystery.
