They smoke whilst pregnant in the hope of having a smaller baby so the birth hurts them less. Can you honestly imagine anybody doing this?! This was on the news this morning so please don't tell me I am making it up! (Check the BBC news). I have never heard of this, have you?

I have heard this before - and it makes me really angry. I smoked 25 cigarettes a day and would drink 2or3 glasses of wine a night, not to mention the caffeine consumption! The day I found out I was pregnant I quit it all. V . Difficult I admit - but I wanted to ensure I gave my child the best possible start. 9 months later my son was born @ 9lbs 2.5oz. I'm so glad I quit my vices. I feel for those struggling to quit drinking & smoking - but, hell, stop being sooooooo selfish. Birth is going to be painful - get use to it - you'll have the most precious thing in the world at the end. Do these idiots not realise that a low birth weight is dangerous for the baby and can lead to a higher incidence of SIDS, plus all the other side effects such as asthma, bronchial diseases, cancer etc that they may be inflicting on their baby. Surely this is child cruelty - but, as always seems the way, an unborn baby has no rights!!!!

There has been established theory that the size of the baby being proportionately small is one of the side effects of smoking-let it be first hand or second hand smoking.

This knowledge could have been known by some teenagers and purposely did the smoking to result having smaller baby. Teenagers are still undergoing physical body changes so their thought of having small baby could be their sort of avoiding very obvious disconfiguration of their body by overly bulging tummy especially if the baby is big. They are so much concerned over their physical changes in this period of puberty which they have to cope to accept, so how much more concern or burden the pregnancy changes will give at this time. It shows their unreadiness for this situation and as much as possible they want it to be concealed or to make it unapparent.

The reason of doing so related to the thought of delivery as you mentioned absolutely gives the reason for them to do the smoking. In normal situations having small baby obviously will be much easier to deliver than the big ones, that is self explanatory. The pain of delivery or labor pain will remain unchanged though, big baby or small the pain will be the same.

You see, they are teenagers and still lack mental, physical, and emotional preparedness for getting pregnant, and such disgusting news is just one amongst the consequences of teenage pregnancy at the cost of the unborn baby and also ath the cost of tennage mother's health. How much help would prenatal education can offer to this group is a question yet needs to be cared for. This is a great concern that needs immediate resolution.

I'm not surprised. There are all kinds of idiots having babies. There ought to be a law!! There are laws about catching a fish, but any brain-dead, moron can have a child. And they're usually the first ones pregnant! Ugh!!

this sounds like typical selfish teenagers so its probably true the only thing is that it can give life long health problems to those poor children. cigarette smoke has been linked to ADD and ADHD so even though they are small when born they will have big personalities that teens will have to deal with when they are toddlers. smoking is so bad whether your pregnant or not

Nothing surprises me about teenagers. Yes I heard it on the tv this morning. It takes one teenager to start a new fad! Of course it doesn't help. pain is pain and the baby had to come out and it will cause pain.

I've never heard of it, but as I read your question it turned my stomach! That's disgusting. There's pain relief out there!! It'll hurt alot more when they can't get a decent nights sleep because their babies are born with chronic asmath and other lung problems!
