it can be stress, a disease, mites. allergies. stress from the change of a new home. check his fur for mites---little black specs. is he scratching? buy some hamster vitamins that u put in his water---could be a deficiency---also make sure his food says at least 15% protein. are you using pine or ceder bedding? if so, change to carefresh or aspen. i know u said u didnt think it was that, but problems with that dont always occur immediately. u said u just got him so i assume hes young---older ones lose fur naturally. if none of these work or the hair loss gets worse take him to a vet. could be a treatable disease.

Is the hamster by himself or with one or more other hamsters? if he is with other than is could be social barbering (over grooming) but that doesn't really account for the skin turning red, it doesn't seem like its a diet issue unless he had an allergic reaction to a food. It seems more like there's inflammation are there any Lil sores on the skin, or just redness? is it in one spot or all over the body? likely causes are a skin irritation or possibly over-grooming itself or mites
might be best if you took he/she vet for a general checkup just in case.

hope that helps (",)

An example, I only feed my dog- dog food and few veggies. Go to : http://www.pgaa.com/burrow/general/hamster.html ---for the care and health of yr pet. He's not a garbage can, he's a tiny little animal.

Sounds like wrong food. Are you feeding it "human" food, like salted peanuts, crisps, cookies....?!
