One of them in my opinion is Father Damien Karras from The Exorcist, to take pure evil into your body and still have the good enough heart to sacrafice yourself is true heroism.

Let's look at this realistically - what makes a real hero?
John McClane from Die Hard - wrong! Total Hollywood! Nothing realistic about any of the movies.
Gladiator - no way! What did he do that was so heroic?
Spiderman - cartoon, cartoon, cartoon! nuff said!

I like what someone else said "Old enough to know that movies didn't start with 'Titanic'." I am old enough to remember watching "Star Wars - A New Hope" in the theaters when it was first released.

Most heroic character in movie history? Well, let's see! I would consider that to be either Obi-wan Kenobi or William Wallace. Both gave their lives for what they believed in. I do realize that Obi-wan and "Star Wars" are complete fiction, but the character is very heroic.

Whether fact or fiction, the character of Moses, in the movie "The Ten Commandments" was by far the most heroic. Many legends depict Moses as a leader who didn't take no sh**, so to speak. He got his people what they needed. Think about him parting those seas and those magical special effects?! How many "bad guys" did we see get swallowed up?! Moses was a bad dude - don't mess with him or he'll turn ya into something!!

Spiderman? 12 year olds should not be on their computers at this hour.
You'd have to pick Sidney Carton in "A Tale of Two Cities."
How about Spartacus, or Ben Hur, or Eric Schindler. Atticus Finch in "To Kill a Mockingbird." "Gladiator", sure. The lead characters n "The Alamo." There are many contenders, and they're not cartoons!

Spiderman, Spiderman,
Does whatever a spider can
Spins a web, any size,
Catches thieves just like flies
Look Out!
Here comes the Spiderman.

Is he strong?
Listen bud,
He's got radioactive blood.
Can he swing from a thread
Take a look overhead
Hey, there
There goes the Spiderman.

In the chill of night
At the scene of a crime
Like a streak of light
He arrives just in time.

Spiderman, Spiderman
Friendly neighborhood Spiderman
Wealth and fame
He's ingnored
Action is his reward.

To him, life is a great big bang up
Whenever there's a hang up
You'll find the Spider man.

Good question. I would go with any superhero out there. In regular films I think Steve Mcqueen as Bullitt was my hero character. I also liked the Dirty Harry Clint Eastwood too.

John McClane from the Die Hard trilogy. That guy takes on incredible odds to save his wife twice and then does it again to save a whole city. He's just a cop but rises to the challenge and gets beaten down hard everytime but still manages to win.
