The polar regions are called "Earth's window" by scientists because the low humidity, clear atmosphere, high altitudes and lack of human radio signals and artificial lighting make for near perfect observing conditions for both visual light telescopes and radio telescopes. There are a number of observatories in Antartica which can only operate there due to exactly these reasons.
