because of the society we're living in: we need material stuff to survive, that's why caring too much or being too deep would be 'in the way'. because of the world we're living in, shallowness is not a choice, but a way of live others (the society) impose on us. The only way to stop being shallow might be giving up all your 'worldly goods' and becoming a monk, or something similar. Otherwise, as money controls our lives, we are dependent of it, and we stop seeing further then this -> that's how material stuff gets more and more important, and we become shallow.

Our individual nature is not shallow. But we've been conditioned like trained animals. We don't see where we are, only where we hope or fear that we're going. Bad educational system destroys curiosity while requiring memorization of "right" answers. Governments propagandize. TV commentators and commercials define our understanding and desires. Anyone who does not behave like a shallow cartoon character has somehow escaped part of our mass conditioning.

We are prone to grasp at things that we find are of solid and permanent value and are materialistically represented. The physical stuff after all is what we find ourselves standing upon with our two feet and this the very stuff that quenches our hunger, or makes us our nests to live in, and then find all other things of much batter value that we need to survive emotionally and spiritually.
What you call shallowness may make perfect sense to many people as meaningfulness in this otherwise complicated life. We all are orientated into physical world first of all as physical beings. We use our sensory perception to navigate through life. Many people find it the only sensible thing if they maintain their firm grasp upon things they can reach physically. They communicate with the world around in terms of physical possessions. Lets be honest isn’t it the truth that we all find this easy, and this is the most reliable means to do business in the world for over many thousands of years of human history. There are of course things of greater and higher value in life: love, happiness, faith, hope courage and loyalty just to name a few. But we cannot put any price upon any of these things. Our material existence therefore necessitates that we regard material possessions at the very base of all enterprises in life.
The matters of ostentations are instinctive, overindulgence is from greed, excess and plenty can be a remedy for the fear of rainy season inculcated into our minds from the days of hunting gathering and living in caves. These are well known traits commonly found in many people, and people do get carried away due to these. The overwhelming reliance upon material things, and ignorance of higher needs of human nature can be personally demoralising and socially degenerative. ‘We cannot not live merely upon bread and butter, we also need heavenly food’, Dostoevsky once said.

Because it allows us to avoid confronting our cowardice when failing to make all those right moral choices and actually standing up and really trying to change the world. We can say that we have responsibilities, we have to pay the bills, etc., as a way of standing by and looking away as other people are enslaved, raped, tortured, and murdered. It allows us to sneer at all the people who try to make a difference, while the world in all its splendor and beauty is completely corrupted and irreversibly damaged for the benefit of the egoism and greed of people who consider themselves to be our lord and masters.
It allows us to tell ourselves how great it is to be free because we get to choose which colour case our ipod comes in. That way we can pretend to be in control of our destinies and not have to confront the fact that we are complete and utter suckers.
Or, alternatively, we just like stuff. It's cool.

Oh yes we most definitely do!
Because, what good is the soul if it does not have a material body to communicate to the rest of the world of its thought?
Smile of a child would be more meaningful than an immaterial "God".

Shallow people generally prove to be better in worldly affairs, especially in socializing, and hence successful in business. They generally make more money than you and me. Not that I care though.
