I'm not married, but when I was engaged, I really appreciated surprise gifts. While asking for a specific gift can help guide to what you want, the surprise of having something given you might not have ever thought of asking for is exciting. And if she ever dropped hints about things she wanted, I'd do my best to find it, but always added something as a surprise. Sometimes whimsical like a jelly bean dispenser or scented candles, sometimes fun like tickets to a play, concert or dinner and dancing.

Ask. Better to get the right gift, than to surprise her with the wrong one.

Surprise. Unless you've given him surprise gifts in the past and they are collecting dust somewhere, it's the best way to go.

I like to have present suprise. It makes me feel good and excited.

I do give her surprise too. Like booking a resturant then fetch her straight from her office to have a good meal together during her birthday.

Don't give surprise gifts unless you see him eyeing it or comtemplate buying it. Otherwise he might not really like what you picked out for him. It would be a waste then.

wives are better at gifts then men. Just think if you asked for something that wasnt expensive and she was going to go out and buy you a new car. lol

I'd rather be asked if it is a big present and kind of pricey, but if it is small inexpensive then I'd prefer it being a surprise.

Actually, I usually drop hints around and before birthdays like - 'You know what I could do with?'
