Environmental management in South Africa is on the responsibility of various government institutions. The Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism is the central policy-formulating and coordinating body. Other organizations involved at this central governmental level are the departments of Agriculture, Water Affairs and Forestry, Minerals and Energy, and Health. At regional level, the provincial conservation agencies play major role.

South Africa is little by little taking an active role what comes to protecting environment and working for the sustainable development. The country has ratified the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands and is party to several international environmental "agreenments". In 1996, there were all ready 422 protected areas (national parks and provincial reserves) in South Africa. All together that makes 6.7 million ha area of land (Project Document, 2001). South Africa, Botswana and Lesotho as border neighbors share the management of these international "agreenments" and also control the care of protected areas together.
