When I put a CD in my CD drive it doesn't update in My Computer.

This causes problems with games that require the CD to run, because the programs don't recognise the CD as being present.
I can open the CD in explorer and browse the files, but in order to go from one game to another I have to restart my computer with the required CD in the drive.

I'm using Windows XP, Norton Antivirus and a generic CD drive.

Any suggestions about what's going on and how to fix this.

You shouldn't necessarily have to restart and I doubt it is dust that is causing the problem.

Try refreshing My Computer with the new CD in the drive. Also, I'm wondering if these are pirated games?

The game CDs aren't bootable, so obviously that user also doesn't know what s/he is talking about.

It could be an issue with Norton, but not necessarily either.

A worse case scenario you might want to reformat your drive after adequately backing up, some other program installed on your computer might be conflicting with the autorun or refresh features.

I guess I would have the immediate question of does your autorun kick in when you enter a new CD... what I mean is, when you go from one game to the next game does it pop up with the some form of introduction screen just by putting the CD in the drive. If it does than your autorun is functioning and you should be able to play the CD. If it doesn't, than you probably have some software confliction with your drive and you have to restart because some other program is claiming a right, as it were, to the CD.... There is various ways to fix that, but you'd have to figure out what program is holding it up and then prossibly uninstall or reinstall. Generally speaking in these type of situations it is usually easier to do a quick backup and reformat to restore the system to minimal operation and then carefully observe what happens as you reinstall certain programs to find the culprit and remedy.

Right Mycomputer -select properties - device manager select CDrom right click on the cd rom and select properties and goto settings and put a tick mark on the auto insert notification box. This I think would solve your problem.

Regardless of whether you have autorun set on your cd, the game still looks on the cd unit for the game! Sounds like you simply have a bum cd unit!

Not much you can do about it, because your game CDs appear to be bootable CDs and need to boot to start the game.

Learn to live with it, I guess.

All the best.

Cheers
