You can't stop the flu once you have it, just buy remedies to relieve symptoms. Forget the old maxim about bedrest. Stay active but away from work and most other people Go for walks if you feel up to it. A flu hates fresh air. Eat especially well. Add honey to tea and you''ll be amazed at how it can make you feel better, with a bit of rum if you can handle it. Gargle with warm salt water for throat.

Mix pure vitamin C powder ( not buffered, it has a nasty taste) with your favorite juice, mix as strong as you can stand it/up to bowel movement, then cut back on the amount of C powder.
For energy, take some CoQ10, 10 - 30 mg, but do not take within 6 hrs of bed time, it may not let you fall asleep.
Drink Chamomile herb tea at bedtime for sore throat and to help you sleep.
No sweets, no dairy, but lots of chicken soup.
Use whatever works for sore throat; salt water gargle; Ginger tea; unsweetened Eucalyptus lozenges.
Always take a good multi-vitamin and mineral supplement with extra A, C, E, Selenium, Zinc, and the herbs Echinacea angustifolia and Hyssop (Hyssop is a good sore throat remedy), especially during flu season to protect yourself from the flu bug. Take the essential omega oils - Fish / Flax / Borage oils (Borage and Flax oil are good sore throat remedies).
If all else fails, get a bottle of MD 20/20 and watch some cartoons, after all, laughter is the best alternative medicine.

I think that the only way to actually not stop but prevent the flu is a vaccination. If you already have the flu though get chamomile and lavender tea bags and put them in a hot bath the chamomile and lavender will work togather to sooth the flu.
A good remedy for a sore throat is pepermint water. If you break up some pepermint candy and boil in some water than slowly sip the water the peppermint wil make the throat better. Both of those things I use on my daughter when she is sick; she feels a lot better after this.

Once you have the flu unfortuantly it needs to run it's course, but keep yourself hydrated. That is the most important thing you can do. Prior to getting the flu you can get a flu shot and you should take Vitamin C daily to help build up your immune system.
For a sore throat, try a warm drink (coffee, tea, or just plain warm water and put honey in it. My grandmother use to make me warm honey water when I was sick as a child and it worked great. I just finished 'nursing' my fiance's sore throat with honey coffee.
Also gargling with warm salt water will help. Good luck!!

I have the flu too. Just drink A LOT of water. Tylenol (or similar products) can make your sore throat much more mellow. Gargle with salt with water to change the acidity of your mouth (this will help your throat). I'm getting better already, also be sure to bundle up when you go out, you can always take clothes off if you're hot but if you're outside and cold, you've got a problem.

For average colds, don't overdue it on either commercially produced medicines or herbal remedies. both have their value and both have there drawbacks including costs. Many strong medicines that "knock you out" work because you are getting rest, not because they are doing much to fight viruses.

Your body's immune system is the mechanism that stops viruses including the flu.

You can help your body by resting, eating healthy food drinking plenty of water. It is especially important rest immediately when you first feel sick. Waiting until you are too sick to go to work or school as most people do is a mistake that increases the length and severity of the illness.

I don't think it is helpful to take all kinds of medicines to alleviate symptoms. Your body has it's own way to get viruses and germs out of your system. Many of these medicines stop your body from doing what it naturally does to get better which keeps you sick longer. Of course very severe symptoms should be dealt with by a doctor. Zinc lozenges seem to help a sore throat and a bit of vitamin C probably helps the immune system.

Zicam really seems to help lessen the severity of the flu and to make it go away faster. The oral tabs are DISGUSTING, but they make a nose spray or a Qtip type applicator that has a gel on it that you insert just inside your nose. (This is what I use.)
For a sore throat, NOTHING will work better than Children's Motrin. It works so well because it is a liquid and it doesn't have to go thru your blood stream to work, it works topically as soon as you take it. WORKS wonders. My son was almost hospitalized for strep because he was dehydrated as he wouldn't eat or drink anything because of his sore throat. Gave him children's motrin and he started eating within 10 mins. So when my dad got a really bad sore throat, I told him to try that and he said it was amazing how it worked. Within 10-15 minutes, his throat wasn't sore anymore. Good Luck! Hope you feel better....

Take five thousand milligrams of Vitamin C and Gargle warm Water with lots of salt in it. Also make sure you get a Flu Shot it will definitely be worth it especially this year!!! Drink a Glass of Orange Juice, If you don't have any go by a container of Tropicana not one that is made from contentrate because you need everything that is in the Orange to get The most Vitamin C out of it. Also you can take pills that Boost your Immune System which you can find at the Gym or your Local Vitamin shop.

Sally, it is improbable that what you have is actually the flu. It is not flu season yet, however, if you do in fact have the flu you should see your physician. He will do a nasal swab to verify that you have the flu and then will most likely give you a medication called Tamiflu which does not stop the flu(it's a virus and you can't stop a virus), it does lessen the severity of the symptoms. If you have a sore throat you may actually have strep throat which is a curable illness through the use of antibiotics. The first step is to call your doctor and make an appointment to see him/her. If you don't have a regular doctor(you need one) then your local emergency room or immediate care facility will have everything needed to help you with your problems. Good luck and feel better soon.
P.S. Do NOTHING that Matthew P. told you to do especially the "coffe" enema thing. Trust me.
