Hey, i've been offered a 1990 Celica but they owner says it has a blown headgasket, and they wont actually take it to a mechanic and get a quote. And i haven't been able to see it yet, so i don't actually know if it's a blown headgasket. But i asked him how it happened and he said that he had slit the top tank of the radiator (yes, he is stupid) and said that caused it to blow, now he can start it up and it idles fine, but as soon as you drive ti 100 metres it overheats.

So is this a headgasket? I've asked him to do a few checks before i go around for a look, or could it be something else? Any advice on what it could be? And whats the average price it would be to repair. Thanks

Basically there are a few different engines for the 1990 celica, the 1.6L ST engine, 2.2L GT engine, and the 2.0L turbo motor for the all-trac. Your expenses will vary greatly depending on which type of celica and engine. A car like this can run into considerable money to repair once you get the cylinder head off and can determine the damage. I would shy away from it unless you are looking for a project car.

YOu need a mechanic to tell you this. THey should have a device to detect the presence of exhaust gas in the radiator coolant. This would tell you that it has a blown head gasket or cracked head.

Problem is that there is no real way to tell the difference between a blown head gasket and a cracked head until the head is removed and crack tested. Being such a complex aluminium head, they are prone to cracking on overheat.

I can't help you with prices because I am in Australia and you don't say where you are from. in Australia I would be expecting between $500 and$1000 depending on what is wrong.

It sounds like its been cooked,be prepared to replace the motor or give it a rebuild.Rebuild might not be worth it either as the head or block could be cracked and need replacing.

I advise you to look for another car. The current owner "cooked" that engine. That car is full of problems now.
