You are going to need to heavily modify that car to race it, mostly in the chassis, clutch, transmission, and suspension mounted areas. The "unibody" sub frame is nothing but sheet metal from the firewall forward. I used to own a 1983 Camaro (305/Borg Warner 5 spd) and constantly had stuff breaking during normal driving.
Before you sink huge money into it, consider getting a 1981 Camaro or something else with a real frame. A powerful motor in a car like the 1982 Camaro is going to start warping things.

take your pick any chevy small block will fit with almost no modificatoins fro a 267 all the way up to a 400 if you dont want to build one ...performance parts crate engines cant be beat you can get a short block or a complete "turn key"engine........and by the way to remark on the answer right before mine....no camaro had a real frame if you put a big power plant in you have to "tie" the subframes

your options are wide open, small block or big blocks. I like big blocks but it really depends on the numbers you want to run. The ZZ4 is a great SBC factory motor 355HP. Edelbrock makes a killer SBC with over 425HP. but keep in mind a good tranny will have to be added. email me if your around middle GA i'll build you one for just what you want to do. fuel injection is the way to fuel it ,not a carb.

drop a chevy 502 crate motor in it. that camaro will take off the line so fast that the person next to you will forget what kind of car they were racing.
