if someone figured out how to go back in time, then someone in the far future would go back in time to prevent this guy from figuring how to go back in time. people are crazy, i can easily see this being attempted.

then, when the first inventor didn't figure out time travel, someone else figured it out first, and it was a different process for our psycho to go back and kill a different guy.

since that psycho didn't kill inventor #1, -now-, #1 will still be able to figure out how to go back in time, instead of inventor 2, and it's an endless cycle
--------
what i mean to say, is that when time travel occurs, time loops will occur as well, disrupting time's flow, and ultimately causing existance to never go beyond a certain point, in 'time'

the introduction of time travel will be the last moment of existance for us... but i don't think we would even realize it anyway

There is one way to going back in time and everybody does it . zillions of people and animals have gone back in time .
When one dies , the event of death marks phenomenally a stopage of movement in him and freezes him to that time of death. The world moves forward and goes to the next day where as the dead man ramaines stationary on the previous day . The next the world has advanced two days over you . Thus the world and the people on it overtake the dead by many many thousands and millionsof years . They have moved in time far ahead of the dead. So the dead have travelled back in time on any and every day of the earth in reltion to the day of theliving people on earth.
The one thing very important and even the Gods could not do, is to reversing the time. The essential and singular character of nature is to be moving incessantly just like the electrons moving without stop in any atome of any element in the living and dead and the animate and inanaimate things .With the sun turning into a white dwarf or a black hole , the most wonderful thing that woud happen is that there will be none to witness the happening and the Gods who live in the minds of living men would also be Gone --. Will cease to exist as there will be no being to remember and know the God . After some thouasands of eons , the worlds might re-emerge from the blcak hole wherein they would be re-cycled in a nuclear reaction ,( which the UNO and any great powers of the earth won't be there to control , stop or regulate with sanctions )
The important thing is that the Gods themselves would have ceased to exist and there wont be any fossil to study and understand the existence of a world in the past .
If the human beings reemerge , they might create new gods . may the same way they have domne in th existing world . if they do some thing differently, that would be bettere for them.Thre is no possiblity of prayin gfor such things as the prsent gods wont be there to control the affairas ot the new world that might come into being later .So let us hope and not pray to anybody.

Things seem to repeat themselves in different eras. What if time was not a straight line, but a spiral. then instead of going against the flow or stream, you can just step across the cosmic void to the earlier time line?

There are times when (daydreaming?) time seems to go faster or slower ... could this phenomena be a basic, primitive method to enable time travel?

The main problem I see is that to transfer a entire object outside of conventional means, there needs to be a receiver at the other end to re-construct the integrity of the thing. A fax is hard enough ... but to reform a human that has traveled back in time ... what would the receiver be like?
If it is possible to utilize natural occuring events (geo-magnetic surges occuring during earthquakes for example) we may be able to do it

The sense in which we understand time is'duration'past, present and future. As the other worthy answerers have endeavoured to give a scientific explanation of the impossibility, not knowing much of Eientein (He once said that even if he were to give a brief summary of his theory of relativity it would take two-three years. I do not have the patience)I would not go along that way.

I will, however, like to tell that Time-past,present and future does exist.Years ago when my daughter wa studying college and the thought of her marriage was miles away from m mind one night I saw her Marriage Invitation card where the name of her would be husband was given. I had reported this matter then to my wife and daugher and also some friends. Ten years later she was married and the name of her bethrothed was the same which had appeared in my dream.

I do not have any psychic powers. Out of curosity I did some reading in the subject of time. I came across a book named An Experiment with Time. I do not remeber the name of the author but it is quite a famous book in English. The author has reported similar experiences of having a glimpse of future during his sleep dreams. To see whether he along possessed this power he asked some of his friends to note down their experiences in this regard. And lo and behold he found that many of his friends had this power. He then constructed a theory of time. He felt that Time is like a ,sliding st aircase. We are standing on the first step but our back is turned back. The steps ahead of us are the past which we can see. That we stand on is the present which we can experience. And the st eps at our back are the future and we are going towards it. He felt that during some of our dreams we, as it were ,slightly move back our head(not much) and have a glimpse of some of the steps. This is during our dreams. But these steps are no imaginary for later on we actually cross them as I did in respect of my daughter's marriage. From this he surmised that Time exists. That way the idea of destiny is akin to this. What is coming to us is predetermined and is only revealed in stages. But that is merely belief. The author has actually, scientiically experimented with this theory and found that in some way the future exist. The end is in the beginning and also middle.

no ,going back to the time is not impossible infact the time exists in space . though mechanical physics denies this by saying that mass lenghth & time of a object is fixed which was being denied first by Einstein by his theory of relativity. mr.raman the indian scientist had done further work on this by saying that if a object can move with the velocity of light then it can break the constant limit of its mass length & time's dimension. twin paradox is the best example he gave.

if a person travells through space for 2 years even with the velocity of sound which is possible now a days and comes back to the earth after that then he may finds that it is only 1.5 years passed.which is only that he came to the .5yrs. newer earth from his time.

Going back in time is impossible because the arrow of time flows only one way.

My favorite (and simplest) explaination of why backwards time travel is impossible comes from Stephen Hawking. He said that if backwards time travel were possible, we would be inundataed by time travellers from the future.

What is time? That's a hard one to explain. Basically it is a dimension which explains sequences and causality. A happens... then B happens. There's a lot more thought involved with that... check out this article. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time

Time is compared with many things, like a river flow, or the rotation of stars. Why is it impossible...i really don't know, because the known human knowledge hasn't solved the quest. Time in my opinion is aging, aging of everything, everything that has born, that has been created, that has evolved on this earth ages with each passing moment, and usually the process is irreversible, this process in my opinion is aging, and it's measurement is done by the term "Time".

Time is explained as the experience of witnessing the passage of one's position of vantage against the appearance of day and night in common parlance. This is a subjective experience. If we move away from the Earth in such a manner that we undo the recordings of the passage of this light and darkness cycle{ moving rapidly from West to East while on Earth's orbit ]theoretically it should be possible to go back in time. When we get used to space travel ,some of these perceptions will undergo radical change and we may create new reference sets.

There is no time. You've been tricked by clocks, calendars and historians into thinking there is a past or future. Now is the only movement anyone has ever experienced.

When you plan about the future, you are having daydreams in the present. When you remember the past, you are daydreaming in the present. Everything that's real is always now and here.

So going back in time is a fantasy. A popular fantasy (I remember our first kiss), but none the less a fantasy.

Pastward time travel may be possible, using wormholes.

Wormholes are theoritical objects that nobody has ever seen, but don't violate any laws of physics and so could exist.

Two wormhole mouths are created in the same instant of time. Traveling inside one mouth will take you instantaneously out the other, no matter the amount of space or time that separate them. By taking one mouth and subjecting it to time dilation (by accelerating it or putting it in orbit around an object of immense gravity) they give you a past-future tunnel.

There are limits in that you can't use them to travel to any arbitrary point in time a la Doc Brown's heavily-modified DeLorean. You can't go to a point in time before the wormhole mouths were created. If you acculumated 5 years worth of time dilation on one mouth than one mouth takes you 5 years into the past and the other takes you 5 years into the future.
