At one year of age they still havent gotten the idea of gifts down so they arent going to get upset if the gift is really something that they might need instead of something to play with. At one they are to busy getting into everything they couldnt before because now they can walk . Since the little one isnt going to notice one way or another what type of gift she gets you might want to make the mom happy and get the little one something that she might need or can wear instead of another toy that the mom will have to pick up and put away along with all the other toys.

My daughter just turned 1. Her favorite toys are toys that she can put things inside of something else. She got a singing piggy bank and it's one of her favorites. It has plastic coins that go into the top slot and the pig counts the coins everytime a coin is inserted. Another favorite toy is a large puzzle with big knobs, she's mastering it. It's made by Light, Camera, Interaction. She is also into anything that she can push buttons and music plays. Another one of her favorite things is an empty diaper wipes container where she can put her rubber duckies in, she carries it all over the place...go figure it really didn't cost anything. Another suggestion is books, make sure they are cardboard. My daughter also loves her Sandra Boynton book and CD.

Since she is One, you dont realy have to define the sex here. I would say any good learning toy or big blocks and such that you can find at your local Supermarket would be good.

My one year old son loves the "ballpopper"(Playskool) also he likes his Big Lego Blocks(so does my 4year old daughter....)

also try maybe a Push and Go train or somthing.

One year olds don't care to much what they get....they might play with the wrapping paper more then the toy.

The best thing would be something fun and educational, as being One, they are learing new things every day.

Stereo and classical music.

I know the mozart effect is rather thouroughly discredited, but it certainly can't do any harm.
