If you want to convert different audio files such as wav, ogg, aac, wma, then a good free audio converter is Switch Sound File Converter. Unlike DBPoweramp it is entirely free and mp3 conversion does not expire after a trial period:
http://www.nch.com.au/switch/index.html
Click on "Windows Download" - this is the free version; the installer will offer to download other software but be aware that none is free apart from WavePad.

Two general transcoders (both video and audio) are both free; they will convert between many different file formats and are probably overkill for simple mp3 conversion.
GX Transcoder

Mediacoder
http://mediacoder.sourceforge.ne

Many different programmes feature mp3 conversion almost as an afterthought. These include CDBurner XP Pro and MediaMonkey (both free)

If you want to rip cds (Switch, CDBurnerXP Pro and MediaMonkey do this too!) there are several excellent free programmes
Audiograbber
http://www.filehippo.com/download_audiograbber/
CDex
http://www.filehippo.com/download_cdex/?403
MusicMatch Jukebox

Two of the easiest tools for ripping cds are also free:
Focus Free CD Ripper
http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/Focus_Free_CD_Ripper/freecdripper.html
Free CD to MP3 Converter
http://www.eusing.com/CDRipper/CDRipper.htm

As far as I am aware none of the above contains spyware or adware. Each programme has its quirks and limitations, and only by trying them will you discover the one programme that suits your needs. As they are all free, you might as well! Good luck.

If you are running Windows XP, it is VERY easy, but you must have mp3 "CODECS" installed.

From a "My Computer" or "Windows Explorer" window, right-click on the file(s) you want to convert. Select the option to "Convert Media Format". Select your conversion options from the drop-down lists. If you do NOT see .mp3 as an option, you need to install the CODECS. The best thing to do for this is go to codecs.com to download any formats you need. They have an XP CODEC pack that has pretty much any that you could need for audio or video. Their site also has instructions for updating your CODECS, and can explain the process for that easier than I can here...

Another option, if you are converting from an audio CD, you can use Windows Media Player to rip the audio to your pc and convert to mp3 at the same time. Make sure you have the CODECS, and be sure to change the options to .mp3 instead of .wma...

Good Luck!

I have tried a lot of different music converting softwares, the best one so far is FairStars Audio Converter 1.31. Very easy to use, gives you a lot of options as well.

a program called CDex...

search on google, or yahoo etc with cdex, it should be the first link.

Great peice of software, its free, but free from any virus etc, soo all good!

Does need your emial address, but u can either put anything or ur one, and u do not get any emails.

Its great becuase you can change nearly anything in the setting regards the conversion, quality, bit rate, freqency etc, all there!

changes .wav to MP3 and the other way round, also does other formats, def worth a try!

Download iTunes from the Internet (it's free and really great). In the Preferences folder, choose Advanced-Importing and then MP3 encoder. Import your music. It is automatically saved in the iTunes library folder and you can then copy it to whatever location you like.
