a teaching hospital..residents are anxious to learn, they are supervised by experienced M.D.s so you get the benefit of 2 for 1. You also have the newest equipment and they are willing to use it.

Any well qualified Dr.can perform a physical exam and can authorize/order an exray/sonargram/mri - or whatever is needed.
A Dr's office visit is least expensive, but if you have decent insurance you may want to try one of the University Hospitals. The "University" part usually denotes that they are a teaching facility, and they are extremely thorough! The interns (doctors) are being taught/observed with patients by qualified specialist doctors.

Your friend should go to a regular physician first for an initial assessment. There's not a shred of evidence that treatment at university hospitals is any better than treatment at an ordinary hospital. I've been a patient in both, and have gotten better and more thorough treatment at a regular hospital.

I am totally a UCLA fan. I had the WORST experience at the cedars sinai ER and it proved my point again! Just make sure your friend sees a good Dr. If he didn't like the Dr. he saw then he needs to see another one. I went to this horrible Dr. at UCLA and then went to another for the same problem at UCLA and the 2nd dr. was amazing. Better technology, up to date treatments etc.

A teaching hospital will be very thorough. Doctors have to start somewhere.
