I have been off work the last few days with a virus/flu type illness. As I only had part time hours and have no sick pay entitlement, this is financially very bad for me.
I understand I might need some kind of sick note, but by the time Im well enough to see a doctor surely he wont be able to give me one since nothing can be proved?

Yeah, I fancied a few days off due to constant fever, vomiting etc. Pretty lazy, eh, baby Poots?
My job is working one to one with students at a college. Id rather not give them what Ive had, either.

If you wanted to claim incapacity benefit (what was sickness benefit) you need to have a doctors certificate. Also the first 3 days of illness are not included. From what you say this looks unlikely. If you're suffering hardship as a result of your illness try giving your local jobcentre a call - they'll advise if you can get Income support for the period or maybe a crisis loan. good luck.

In the UK if you are too ill to go to the doctor they should come and see you.
Without a sick note you will not get any sickness benefit (Statutory Sick Pay) - which your employer will claim from Department of Work and Pensions and pay to you.
For the first three days you will not be paid anything, after that the current rate is £70.05 from April 2006 as long as you are earning at least £84.00 per week. But without a sick note from your Doctor you will not get a penny.

As a general rule, part-time employees have no benefits, and you are entitled to no sick-time pay. A statement from a physician may enable you to keep your job; but, if you did not consult a physician at the onset of your illness, and are expecting a physician to verify that you were ill before he saw you, is stretching your credibility. Sounds to me like you just wanted a few days off and are trying to plead "sickness". Unless your employer is really gullible and naive, I think you need to start looking for another job.

If you are in UK you can get a self certificate for the first 7 days after that it is a doctors paper full instructions as to how to fill them in where to send them etc are on the form.
The doctor has to exam you to issue a medical certificate however at his or her discretion they can be backdated a couple of days

Do you mean legally? By "benefit" do you mean some type of monetary reimbursement? I doubt it either way. Lots of people are in your situation every single day. They just have to live with it.

when you are off sick, you fill in your own sick note to cover you for the 1st week, after that you have to get sick notes from your gp. the sick note you fill in yourself, is obtained from your gp's surgery.
