How do you make sure that you will still be remembered after your death. Genaration after genaration will know that someone like you have existed.

You can do good like Gandhi or bad like Hitler, both famous in their own ways and will be remembered for ever.

Search your family tree, how many names do you know of them, all gone and forgotten, just like you will be soon.

Immortality is not easy, needs total devotion, not just for name sake.

Why does it matter to you who remembers you after you're dead?

Since there's no guarantee that life will continue or that humans will not go extinct or that some catastrophe will not wipe out civilization--and memories--there is nothing you can do to be immortal. You can't plan it or prepare for it. The best you can hope for is that a little band of people may remember something you've done or said and immortalize you in song or story. But even that lasts only for a while. We remember only a very few people. 5000 years ago when China, for example, began, only two people are remembered from that time, both kings or rulers. From 5000 years ago, only a few people around the world are remembered, if at all, and some of them are remembered only because someone started an oral and then a written history of them or an archeologist discovered them. All life is change. All life is coming into being and passing away. Only a few kings or leaders of yesteryear are remembered--all the rest are forgotten. If you ever become a king or great ruler, maybe they'll remember you. Even the gods are not immortal. Who remembers Zeus or Neptune or Apollo?

Lots of good answers here already. I can only add a little bit. Who do you remember from two generations ago and what did they do? How about someone from a hundred years ago? Two hundred? What did these few people contribute to the world? You will probably think of artists or writers if you try to remember people from a few hundred years ago, but art is different now. these people actually made a difference in the way people think about the world. That is the level of accomplishment it takes for the world to remember you- maybe not the exact same type, but the caliber.
Or have children, raise them well, they'll have grandchildren for you, survive long enough to show your grandchildren your wisdom and then give your great work of art to your family as something to remember you by.

There is no way to make one's "self" immortal. Even if you are important historically, history will eventually be rewritten and you will be forgotten. Of course, the current civilization and/or our species won't last forever either, so any traces of you in the gene pool will also disappear.

Live for the moment. This is all you have while you are alive.

When my dad died, I remember my mother telling me that he would live on... through his children.

That was 27 years ago.....
and she was right.

For good or bad, this is true.
You do leave a piece, a part of yourself behind.

You leave a legacy.
I would look to your own family history.. and note that there
were perhaps many people, that are now.... "immortal".

That's love and respect in a form most people never
comprehend or realize.

Can we accomplish this as the living? Before we die?!!!!!

Now there's a challenge........

If you want to be remembered for better or worse, leave a paper trail. One's sense of self is developed over a lifetime of experiences. Cloning is not the answer to immortality.

work tirelessly for others. fill a need that you may come across. use all your resources and knowledge become known to powerful men as a crusader for the betterment of the human condition. so that you may influence governments, for the betterment of all. do it humbly without thirst for gain or fame. people will remember you and the difference you made in their lives, and will talk about you often, among themselves and to new generations.

Immortality comes from not wanting it.

People like Mother Teresa and Ghandi were not looking to be remembered, but to give unto others. Their nobility and selflessness overcame any other needs. They were altruistic to the highest degree. They lost their lives, and in so doing, found immortality.

Christ said it once. So it remains.
