Bollywood (Hindi: बॉलीवुड, Urdu: بالیوڈ) is the informal name given to the popular Mumbai-based Hindi language film industry in India. The term is sometimes used incorrectly to refer to the whole of Indian cinema.
The name is a portmanteau of Bombay, the old name of Mumbai, and Hollywood, the center of the United States film industry. Though some purists deplore the name, arguing that it makes the industry look like a poor cousin to Hollywood, it seems likely to persist and now has its own entry in the Oxford English Dictionary.
Bollywood and the other major cinematic hubs (Tamil, Bengali, Telugu, and Malayalam) constitute the broader Indian film industry, whose output is the largest in the world in terms of number of films produced and in number of tickets sold. Bollywood is a strong part of popular culture of not only India and the rest of the Indian subcontinent, but also of the Middle East, parts of Africa, parts of Southeast Asia, and among the South Asian diaspora worldwide. Bollywood has its largest diasporic audiences in the UK, Canada, Australia and the U.S., all of which have large Indian immigrant populations.
Bollywood is also commonly referred to as "Hindi cinema", even though use of poetic Urdu words is fairly common. There has been a growing presence of English in dialogues and songs as well. It is not uncommon to see movies which feature dialogues with English words and phrases, even whole sentences. A few movies are also made in two or even three languages (either using subtitles, or several soundtracks).

POSITIVE!!! b/c before this, people didn't even know any of the Hollywood stars or anything about India. nobody in Hollywood had mentioned india in any of their films...even though they mentioned china, japan, etc. and slumdog is a remarkable step b/c it was filmed in india, on indian people, and some of the Dialogue was in Hindi!! so, slumdog millionaire just shows how the Hollywood is starting to take interest in bollywood and india. also, there are a lot of Indians in US. so i am positive that one day, American theaters will cast bollywood movies too! just wait and watch! :) one little interesting fact : in indiana, a state in US, there was an article about bollywood, bollywood stars, and movies in the mewspaper!!! so that just shows that bollywood is growing :)

Bollywood is the name given to the Mumbai-based Hindi-language film industry in India. When combined with other Indian film industries (Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Malayalam, Kannada), it is considered to be the largest in the world in terms of number of films produced, and maybe also the number of tickets sold. Bollywood films are usually musicals.
The term Bollywood was created by conflating Bombay and Hollywood. Hollywood is in Southern California and is known for its movie stars and sets. It is where all the famous people go.. duh!

HOLLYWOOD:
Hollywood is a district in Los Angeles, California, U.S.A., situated west-northwest of Downtown. Due to its fame and cultural identity as the historical center of movie studios and stars, the word "Hollywood" is often used as a metonym for the American film and television industry. Today much of the movie industry has dispersed into surrounding areas such as Burbank and the Westside, but significant ancillary industries (such as editing, effects, props, post-production, and lighting companies) remain in Hollywood.

It is simple. Hollywood is the original place famous for production of cinema in the US. In India, Bombay, as Mumbai was then known as, became famous for making of Hindi cinemas. This is called Bollywood, on the line of Hollywood. Similarly, in Chennai, Kodambakkam is the place where a number of studios for production of cinemas are situated. Tamil cinema industry is therefore referred to as Kollywood.
