If it's urine smell, you'll need a cleaner with enzymes to break up the proteins in the urine. I haven't heard of any home remedies that work for pet urine. I recommend Nature's Miracle. It can be found at a pet store. It has a white bottle, red lettering. It's safe for use with kids and pets around and can even be used in laundry.

rent a steam cleaner (clean it when you get home or everyone else's funk will be in your carpet). use white vinegar instead of water. sprinkle baking soda on carpet then steam clean. you can mix in a few drops of esential oil if you want , but i would wait for the carpet to dry completely first to make sure the smell is out.

you might need to steam clean 2 or 3 times to get all smell out before the essential oil thing.

I like that spray on carpet foam...it smells good and it is so convenient...it lifts the stuff right up out of the carpet and you just wipe it off. And fast? That stuff is handy and fast!!!
Home remedy? When I bought my area rug from Sears it said to sponge mop it using a mild solution of dish soap and water...works great.
