from your reply, i think the answer yes. Since i'm planning to develop a membership system with login function, i'd definitely need to learn mysql. i thought that php has its own database creation capabilities. thank you very much

Depends on what you want to do. If you plan on developing applications that use MySQL for data storage, you should learn at least some basic SQL. If not, then there's clearly no need.

mySql is for database applications. PHP does not automatically mean you'll be doing database stuff, so the short answer is no.

However, for a free SQL type database, mySql is cheap and easy to learn.

any sql supported by php is ok,which may be sqllite,postgresql etc. but mysql is supported by php like no other databases
