There are 2 ways to deal wiht a question like this
1) since 40% is off, it means that the sale price is 60% of the marked price which is $87
60% of $87 = (60/100) * 87 =261/5 = $ 52.20

2) since the discount is 40%, find it first
40% of $ 87 = (40/100) * 87 = 174/5 = $ 34.80
sale price = marked price - discount = $87 - $34.80
= $52.20

It is $87 less 40% of $87. That's what 40% off means

40% of $87.00 = $34.80
$87.00 - $34.80 = $52.20
