Most Americans are simple people who live modest lives and haven't ever met a rich or famous person and just see them on the television sometimes. There are those magazines and TV shows that completely exaggerate the status of celebrities and make everything seem SO outrageous that some people are sucked into buying these magazines.
I think the actual amount of curiosity is less than how much the media just shoves it down our throats. I could easily not see anything about a rich and famous person on television... actually I'd prefer they showed less about it. But somehow you can't escape it.
