What do I need to record music containing microtones (as in arabic scales). All I have is a Mac with Garageband. I am a singer and need to emulate with the keyboard the microtones that I sing. Do I need a special keyboard? Is there a software or add-on for Garageband that would do the job?

Thank you for your help!

Disclaimer: My knowledge of micro-tones is minimal, but I will tell you what little I know.

Garageband really isn't up for this, as far as I can tell. It has rudimentary MIDI functions, and no support for Audio Units. If you can import MIDI files into Garageband, you may find a piece of software that will let you edit micro-tones in a recorded MIDI-file, and then import that file into Garageband - I don't know Garageband well enough to tell, but I suspect there's no MIDI import function...?

The Scala software will aid you in retuning your keyboard/synthesizer (depending on the brand and model, I suspect) in different scales - might be worth checking out. There's a list of supported instruments (hardware and software) on Scala's website (see source).

If you invest in a proper audio/MIDI-sequencer such as Logic Express, you will have support for Audio Units and there are a few software synthesizers on the market today that support micro-tunings, such as the Camel Audio Cameleon 5000.

Sorry I can't be of more help, and good luck.

Cheers,

Arne S.
