i work for a lawyer. i wouldnt say hes cocky or arrogant. very nice guy and very straight to the point. i think that they have to be cocky and arrogant in court to seem assertive and intimidating, thus helping them win their case. perhaps because it is a part of their everyday job it becomes habit in everyday life. also it may help them get hired by their clients. i wouldnt hire a pussy of a lawyer, would you? lawyers need to be able to take what they want and to sell themselves and their clients. that is how they are successful in their cases.

I wouldnt say most lawyers are rich... They just like to charge out the wazoo....
They are usually cocky and arrogant because it takes a special type of person to try to persuade others and act like they know more or have better information than the other guy. I don't think a really wishy-washy timid person would make a great lawyer.... at least not generally speaking.
But there are good lawyers who are neither cocky nor arrogant... it's rare, but there are intelligent professional lawyers who at the same time are modest.

Hahaha. I think that all the time when I'm in court---I hate going there, and I'm a lawyer myself (brand new--let's just hope I don't turn into "one of those"). I work in a major city, where everybody is walking around in their armani suits and their $1,000 briefcase. I have met plenty of nice lawyers, especially those working for the public defender and not-for-profit organizations..where the work environment is a whole lot more laid back. Also, many lawyers from small country towns are especially nice..I come from a small town, and worked for a law office there. There are numerous reasons why MANY, not all, lawyers are that way. You're thinking of the big-firm, corporate lawyers...that you see in court all the time and on TV. Many think they're the sh** for whatever reason...parents got more money (many of whom were lawyers), went to a top-tier law school, worked for this big name firm. As someone told me "Practicing law is all about egos, not how good your practice actually is."

Because they got you by the balls--and they know it. "Pay my ( HUGE )fee--and I'll set you free". Their Alpha arrogance also is a catalyst for going for the success of monetary wealth with a vengance either in the legal areas of international/corporate law or pesonal injury law.
But if you get in trouble with the Law: be prepared to pay up big and possibly get traded around with other lawyers like a baseball card. The lawyer is on top of his world's game--and they LOVE the control.

I look at the answers posted and I'm not surprised, most hate lawyers (myself included) but I have to ask, you make a mistake, drink too much and drive. Hopefully you didn't have a car crash but you get pulled over and charged. Who you gonna see, not Ghost Busters. So before you all trash talk them think about the next time you screw up. You just gonna stand up and and say I made a mistake and I'm here to take my punishment or are you gonna hire a lawyer? Things that me say hummmm.

Probably because they have a reputation for being wealthy and smart. I don't know, I've dealt with some pretty ignorant and not to mention broke lawyers.

Because they can manipulate the system and are used to taking advantage of people and getting rich doing it...
They almost have a license to print money and get away with it.
That is what makes them cocky & arrogant...
Too much power & freedom, too little control...
We need to get rid of the "contingency fee" system of torts in the
USA...

Most lawyers are arrogant because they are taught in law school they are more intelligent and superior to others. Shame on law schools.
