I like how the "New York Times Review of Books" described it when it was first published in 1898 - "a deliberate, powerful, and horribly successful study of the magic of evil."

Yes, I have read it, more than once, and it is one of the most haunting stories I have ever read.

Try Shirley Jackson's "The Haunting of Hill House" for a similar, though much clearer, story.
