I have a 50 gallon tank with only 4 goldfish and six neons in it. For months they all lived together happily. Now the neons are attacking the goldfish, taking huge bites out of there sides that at first look like red welts then white bumps. I have actually witnessed the neons doing this to the poor gold fish.
What can I do to make them stop? Or where can I find more info about this?

Contrary to the one above posters belief, goldies do not just up and carry diseases, all fish can get bacteria's, get parasites and have problems, but they do have causes and the neons could cause one leaving bites with the effects of stressing them, breaking the slime coat and creating either ulcers (open sores) and/or bacterial & fungal infections.

A tank divider is one solution, but preferably a second tank for the neons is much much better. As the goldies get more size, the neons could be a tasty snack since Goldies are omniverous.

Its not a wise idea to mix Tropicals and Goldies as noted though above, differences in needs, water quality and medications can seriously conflict and create a death scene sadly. Good luck! :)

you need to seperate them. Though they may be together with what you think are no problems Neons and Goldfish really require different types of water.

Neons do better with a ph around 6.8 and temp near 80f and softer water.

Goldfish do better with a higher ph 7.5 or better, and though golfish can tolerate a pretty big range of temps around 70 is best for their digestion and they also prefer harder water.

So you are really doing them a disservice by keeping them together.

And yes neons can be a bit nippy. It's either nip or be eaten in the end.

Hope that helps :)

i'm uncertain as to why you're keeping goldfish with tropical fish, or as to why you're no longer keeping your glofish/zebra danios (they do no longer seem to be neon tetras) in a perfect college. They thrive whilst saved in shoals of a minimum of 6-8, and that they are energetic, so they desire a huge tank of around 30g. the two different glofish are in all probability the culprits. Shoaling fish improve a pecking order and the bigger ones will %. on the weakest and smallest, generally until it dies. they're lacking 3 of their shoal participants, so they're maximum in all probability under pressure out, it extremely is why she has been nipped at. The goldfish, looking on their length could desire to've bullied the glofish simply by fact goldfish are clearly playful. you could desire to separate the goldfish from the tropical fish in the present day simply by fact they require distinctive temperatures to thrive. in the adventure that your tank is sufficiently great, get a minimum of three different glofish. *i'm uncertain why quite everyone seems to be asserting that the betta is the single being aggressive, lady betta's are not aggressive by skill of nature, so I doubt that's her.

Neons stay at the top, your goldfish are going to the top too frequently, to breathe....the tank needs better air pump to keep the goldfish at lower levels..

Really? I've never experienced anything like that before. Usually the Neons are the ones who are on the receiving end.

The neons are probably getting territorial. Rearrange your tank every time you do weekly water changes and possibly add more decorations. They will be too busy checking things out to start fighting again.

First off, you should not mix tropicals with goldfish ! Goldfish are to slow and Carrie a lot of diseases that will effect the tropicals. I would suggest either getting rid of one or the other !

seperate them....its the ONLY way, fish will eat live organisms before they eat fish food

there is no other way

they might also have established the goldfish of some kind of danger,IE: one or all of your goldfish have a virus or disease, test your water PH levels and see if your gold fish are changing color

(Dark red or a kind of yellow)

Goldfish is one of the mildest fish species. You can't mix them with other types of fishes. You know what to do next.
