Many who post questions in this category seem to be just looking for an answer (e.g. "Solve this problem: x + 3 = 20.") Many respond with nothing more than "x=17." How does this help the student? Others respond by harassing the asker; how does this help? I've tried an approach I'll share in a minute. I wonder what you all could say to help fine tune it (or get rid of it, or tell me I'm way off track, or whatever)--

"It looks like this might be a homework question. Please feel free to read the assigned material. Then, if you are still uncertain about something, please post your thoughts on-line and we'll help you fine tune them."

Feedback of any kind is appreciated. Kind feedback is most appreciated.

Akshya asked if I was a teacher.
I believe that all of us are called to teach. (What's the point of learning something if we're not going to share it?)
I believe teachers should be rewarded in many more ways than our current system allows.
Educating others is definitely an importnat part of my job, but I am not a teacher in the traditional sense.

There are a number of questions that ask for the steps, so I think these students are stuck somewhere and just need to see an example worked out for them. So I write an explanation along with doing the solution.

I agree with you about the ones who just want an answer, and those who write rude responses.

It would be a good idea if the people asking for help would say what they've done already so it can be fine tuned, as you said.

I try to give people hints as to how they can answer it. I answered one earlier where it was obvious they wanted me to do the work - I said "First you have to find the radius of the circle, then use that to find the circumference." Etc, etc. It points them to concepts and formulas that they ought to have, without doing the work for them.

But yeah, I agree with you. The "solve for x, here's 20 problems for you to do" really bothers me. I have a theory that the Internet has contributed to a downfall of education, because so many people want to use it to do their thinking for them, rather than as a tool to help them gain further understanding and thereby formulate their own critical responses.

Whew. Sorry for the rant.

Depending on the question, i will give hints, explain the process, or show in detail how to reach the solution using general variables instead of the numerical values in the question. Only rarely will I provide the actual result.
