My vagina recently has started being very itchy. I haven't been sexually active and nothing has changed in the recent months. Any ideas?

Absolutely nothing has changed. Diet, detergent, panties, soap, tampons etc. There isn't a weird odor. Nothing. Just itchy all of a sudden.

It will be an infection, most likely to be a yeast infection such as thrush; every woman gets this at some time in her life.

The infection is a fungal infection of any of the Candida species, it can occur in any part of the body and is not a sexually transmitted disease, but it can be passed back and forth between partners so it is wise to avoid sex until the infection is cleared up.

The symptoms of a yeast infection are itching, excessive cottage cheese like discharge and a change in vaginal smell, however if you have a yeast infection you may not have all these symptoms, itching alone is the most common symptom women experience.

The most common causes of these infections are through using tampons and soaps because both commercial tampons and soap contain chemicals that affect the vagina's natural pH, this in turn affects the balance of bacteria and yeast in the vagina and vulva causing infections such as thrush or bacterial vaginosis.

These chemicals can also cause irritation and allergic reactions, even if you have been using them for a while, tampons also further encourage infection by preventing your vaginas normal cleaning functions and gives bacteria the perfect environment to multiply.

Your vagina is self-cleaning; all it ever needs to stay clean is water and your hand to make sure any areas where dirt or bacteria can gather are thoroughly cleaned, soaps, bubble baths, wipes or washes will all negatively affect your vaginal health putting you at higher risk of infections like thrush.

It's also recommended you use a safer menstrual option such as organic tampons that do not contain chemicals as commercial tampons do, or avoid the problem of tampons all together by switching to pads or menstrual cups that have no health risks associated.

If you don't know what is causing the itching then see a doctor for testing and treatment, this is to make sure this is all that it is and that you get it treated correctly.

If it is thrush, which it sounds like, then this is something you can treat yourself in the future when you know what it is – thrush can be treated at home with over the counter treatments from the pharmacy or with home methods that will deal with the infection and in some cases will help re-introduce healthy bacterial and yeast balance back to your vagina.

Home treatment ideas;

-Plain pro-biotic yogurt inserted in the vagina and onto the vulva, yogurt contains Lactobacillus acidophilus, a bacterium that also happens to be found in healthy vaginas, and that acidophilus kills yeast by producing hydrogen peroxide.

-Garlic clove peeled and inserted into the vagina, leave for several hours, replace every few hours. Garlic contains natural antifungal substances that kill off yeast.

-Tea tree oil put over the vulva and into the vagina as much as possible, it can sting however it is very successful for treating infections due to being antibacterial.

-Boric acid loaded into capsules is a very strong treatment for yeast infections; it can cause burning and excessive discharge so discontinue use if this occurs.

-Drink cranberry juice, unsweetened, it prevents bacteria clinging to the urinary tract which is why it is used for UTI's but it also effects the pH of your urine that helps cure yeast infections.

There are a lot of home remedies, but the best way to deal with it is to see a doctor as you are not sure what the infection is so better be safe than sorry. To help cure the infection and prevent any further infection don't use soap to wash with, avoid tampons or commercial pads, avoid tight or synthetic clothing, avoid sugars as yeast love their sugar, keep clean and dry. Good luck.

probably a yeast infection. this is not an STD, just an infection. usually causes a whitish pasty secretion and lots of itchiness. you can now buy OTC medicines for it. try Monistat. if you can't find it, the pharmacist or someone at the store can help you to find it. there are different methods, the most common one would be the vaginal insert where you insert and squirt the medicine in, and it usually comes with a topical anti-itch as well to relieve that. i think it takes anywhere from a day to a week to cure, depending on which you buy. if that doesn't fix the prob., go see a doctor

Girl sounds like a yeast infection. They have some great over the counter creams..but the MD can give you an RX that works in 24 hours if you can't stand it.

The ones from the drug store takes a bout 72 hours but each day it gets a little better.

Doesn't have to be from sex honey!

But I feel for you it can be miserable!

Using perfume tampons or nylon panties can cause irritation and hold in moisture!

yeast infection is what I thought also. Have you changed your tampons...or do you use pearl tampons? I had a friend that did and then got an infection because of the particles that were left from the string on the pearl tampons.
Go to the store and buy some monistat.

probably a yeast infection. you said nothing has changed, but any little thing can do it. what about your diet? or wearing a wet swimsuit for too long. I'm one of those girls that never get yeast infections. But after one night of wearing a tight pair of jeans, i was in pain the next day. there are so many little things that can trigger it. eat yogurt daily, it has good bacteria that can make it go away/ help insure it never comes back.

I`d say a yeast infection, or Thrush as we call it in the UK. Try Canesten cream, or a natural bio youghurt on the end of a tampon can clear it. I know it sounds messy, but it works!!!
