The service engine soon light could be illuminated for many reasons (far too many to list). The theory behind it's operation is this: Your car has a computer in it. Your cars engine has sensors on it that measure diferent things (such as coolant temperature, the amount of air going into your engine, etc.). The cars computer watches these sensors, and if it sees that something isn't right, turns the service engine soon light on. Granted you could take your car to an auto parts store (such as Auto Zone) and they may be able to tell you what code the computer in your car has, but this information may prove unhelpful, and most likely they will use that information to sell you a part you may not need. The best thing to do is have it looked at and professionally diagnosed by a licenced automotive repair technician. After you have it properly diagnosed you can then see if it is a repair you can complete yourself, or if it would be best done by a repair mechanic. As for a tune-up solving the problem, that may not be the answer. The computer systems in cars back in 93' were very primative compared to todays standards.

If it has over 100,000 Miles, I'm going to Guess it's the Oxygen Sensor, if it's never been Replaced. But, the only way to know for sure is to Hook Up a Vehicle Diagnostic Scan Tool. To Test to see if the Light can be Cleared, Disconnect the Negative Terminal of the Battery, with the Engine Off. Then, Switch the Ignition Key on, and leave it on for about 20 Minutes. Then, Switch the Key back Off, Reconnect the Battery, Start the Car, Drive it, and see if the Light goes off , and Stays Off the Next Time it's Started and Driven. If that doesn't Cure it, then You'll have to use the Diagnostic Tool. Also, as another Answerer Stated, Check all Vacuum Hoses, and the Gas Cap,/ Evaporative Emissions System .Hope this Helps !

Because Oldsmobile engineers in the early 90's were awful, and they couldn't create a quality product to save their lives.

You have to get the codes out of the computer to find out what made it come on.
