My friend and I were discussing the types of feelings we get when we actually enjoy what some people call work. I personally think she's in the wrong career for right now. So how do you know?

Take the 3E.
What do you enjoy?
What are you effective at?
What do people encourage you to more of?

I attended a seminar and the speaker told us that you have not found your career when you keep thinking that you should be doing something else. If this is the case, then you should go and do that something else instead of what you are currently doing.

However, if you are satisfied and you don't see yourself doing something else then this is a pretty good indication that you've found your career.

When I was fresh out of college, I tried working as a Quality Assurance Engineer but I kept thinking about being a Technical Support Engineer so I switched. When I was a Technical Support Engineer, I kept wanting to be a Technical Support Manager so I switched again. After a year, I kept thinking about being a systems administrator so I switched yet again. Right now, all I can think about is what I am doing. I no longer go into work wanting to do something else so I think I've found my true career.

Work is one of those funny things - often we find we are not getting the fulfillment from it we had hoped for. And yet, individually, we can be totally fulfilled in other ways. My mother worked at a dull job for over 20 years. She didn't enjoy her work, but it let her provide her children with a good life. She did not define herself or her life as her job. Depending upon circumstance - work isn't that big a deal.

Having said all that, if your friend wants to explore new avenues - she should. If she is free to change careers or go back to school, that's great. If, however, she has compelling responsibilities which keep her where she's at - then just be supportive of her. I don't think my mother ever regretted the hours she worked for the sake of her family. You just have to know what is important in your own life.

Best of luck!

Holy crap! That Kathy girl above just posted the first post that was so badly and incomprehensibly written that I literally couldn't finish it!

On topic, your true calling is the career that you're massively successful at while maintaining happiness.

For example, the best, richest doctor in the world, who neglects his family and doesn't sleep at night, hasn't found his calling.

The happiest accountant in the world who sleeps on his high school pal's couch (He's 32 years old) is also in need of finding his true calling.

If you make a good living, or, better yet, attain wealth and fame at your job, and you can also keep a very happy home life and have plenty of time for your wife and kids or whoever else you care about, among those, yourself, then you have found your true calling.

Probably just a trial and error thing. Some people never find their true calling or it takes them many many years to find it.

Try to pick something you think you can live with and do some major research on the net about that field.

When you love what you do and
You do what you love!!

If you love helping others then you wouldn't see it as work, such as listening to people, and truly help them, a career in psychology, psychiatry, counseling, etc.
