You will find it prescribed in the Qur'an as a punishment for theft.

May be I will be the only one replying to you from the opposite side, as all people here are clearly against the practice, without trying to think about it. Just I noticed that Witch Two wrote: (I happen to think if we did that for a year we would have a lot less people stealing). This is exactly the rational for such so harsh punishment (I confess it is so harsh). Its target is not to have many members of the community with cut hands but to have very few criminals. You see the imprisonment system in USA never succeeded to reduce crime incidence, isn’t it time to think of some thing else? I can’t understand why every one feel merci to the criminal but not for the victim. Any way, because of the western pressure and propaganda, only Saudi Arabia and Iran apply it now. I can not introduce enough discussion in this short note especially that most people here are so angry and mixing beheading with stoning with hand cutting as if all are from Islam. My final comment is: I am defending the role not the malpractice. The Islamic role is no one to be punished till the judge is completely sure that he is the one who did it and there were no social or family conditions that pushed him to steal (hungry person or stealing to feed his poor family are not getting their hands cut). I will refer you to a web page that discuss the issue from Islamic perspective:
http://www.shariah.net/
Hope you will read it with open mind. Finally, I am not inviting you to apply our roles but just to try to understand that there are other different ideas in this world. It is not necessarily to be wrong just because it is not done in the west. Peace.

Though I do not have the evidence you may want, friends living in the Middle East say it still exists. You also have to note that it is usually the right hand that is cut off. Traditionally, bread of some sort is used to scoop up food. The left hand is considered unclean because it is used to clean oneself after certain body functions. So not only does the offender suffer the loss of a hand, he also suffers the humiliation of being force to eat with the hand that is considered to be unclean.

All countries that follow strict Islamic law do this. It is standard practice in Saudi Arabia.

You can also find websites about the suffering in Iran and Afghanistan before we liberated it.

In Afghanistan under the Taliban, if a man was killed as a solder for the government, his widow had no income, and was forced into the life of a prostitute to support her children.

If she was caught being a prostitute, she was stoned to death.

Check it out. It is God's truth.

If you don't believe it, move there, and let us all know what's happening.

Yes, that happens. My son saw a man in the Phillipines threatening to cut his small son's hand off with a machete because he stole from a man. The man felt that the father would cut off the child's hand, so he said that he had given the thing to the boy.
After all, young women in Baghdad have been beheaded in the town square for adultery, not so very long ago. In some countries, thieves do have one of their hands cut off as punishment.

Yes its true that fundamental islamic nations like saudi arabia cut off a person's hands for robbery. Its their way of punishing the offence and maintaining law and order. thats why people never have to lock the doors of their houses in these countires. You can do some searches on google if you have doubts!

I have seen it on news stories on tv. I also heard much more horrendous stories from my step father who worked at Esso/Exxon. He saw many disturbing things in Saudi Arabia and other countries......truly disturbing things. I happen to think if we did that for a year we would have a lot less people stealing.

well i must say its a wrong practice.
